Basilius Besler's 'Great Herbal' is one of the largest books in the Library and certainly the heaviest. The enormous large folio volume is full of beautiful engravings of the flowers, vegetables and garden plants in the garden of Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, Prince Bishop of Eichstatt. Chetham's Library was founded in 1653 and is the oldest surviving public library in Britain. It is housed in a medieval sandstone building in the city centre of Manchester which dates from 1421. To find out more about the Library and its history, click here.
